Osteopathy was created in the 19th century by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, MD and Surgeon. Dr Still’s goal was to create a drug free manual therapy able to relieve the patient's pain.
Osteopathic manipulative medicine also called Manual Osteopathy is a holistic hands-on approach to treating pain and dysfunction. It includes musculoskeletal manipulations, visceral and cranio-sacral techniques.
At Knead A Break, the first consultation includes a thorough health history, assessment, and treatment. Follow-up treatments can range from 30-60 minutes depending on the treatment plan set by your Osteopathic Manual Practitioner.
When treating children, the appointment is scheduled for one hour in order to give 30-40 min of treatment in the most relaxed conditions as possible.
In Canada, Manual Osteopathic practitioners held titles like D.O.M.P , D.O (M.P) or M(Ost). Manual Osteopathic practitioners in Ontario are registered with different associations. The Ontario Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioner (OAO) is the most recognized and require the highest quality of training to become a member. It is often one of the only associations recognized by insurance companies like Sunlife and Manulife, while Greenshield and Blue cross offer direct billing for Manual Osteopathy treatments, most of the companies require the patient to send them the receipt of the treatment in order to be reimbursed.
